My reflection on 5366

I have learned a great deal about making a logo and the importance of a personal logo. A personal logo can help a student understand or define their values. “Especially international teachers like myself who go recruiting ever 3 to 5 years and need to understand that their name and skills are their brand and can help them in getting hired.”(Schawbel, D 2009) This quote helped me realizes how personal branding can not only communicate who you are to others but assist a student in firming up their own identities. I also learned the educational values of gaming. “These young people continue to play games as adults: research has shown that the average age of a video gamer in the United States in 2009 was 35 years”.(L Johnson 2010) This quote made realizes that many of my coworkers have been gaming most of their lives. Gaming can be a great teaching tool.

I have also realized through my reading that administration needs to buy in to implementation of technology tools. “An investment in appropriate professional development is needed for the successful implementation of these tools. Teachers also need time to think about how to integrate technology resources into their classroom in a way that fully supports instruction.”(L Wahl 2005) This quote is where I found the fourth strategy I would like to employ is a type of is a forum or Tech Tuesday sort of thing. A former district had planned to implement this type of strategy where the first Monday of every month the technology director would be on campus and during your conference period. You and others would meet with him for either a question and answer session or instruction on new applications or ways to utilize technology in the classroom. The project was never followed up with but in theory it was fabulous. I know teachers are extremely protective of their time and I would have to “come out with guns blazing” to engage them and prove that this is worth their time but once I get them to buy into the program I feel we could have a long lasting impact on overall student learning and lifetime achievement.

As a lifetime learner we as teacher should always try and explore the new technology that is provided to us. In my years of teaching, I have witnessed the surge of technology through education, from a classroom without any computers to a classroom that has a built in computer lab, interactive Smart Board and state of the art projection system. The tools to reach the digital learner are there and need to be employed by teachers to reach these students.

The Lisbon Hebrew Bible

The Lisbon Hebrew Bible

My initial impression of The Lisbon Hebrew Bible was that even though I am unable to read the language or even recognize the letters or symbols it must be a written document because of its arrangement. Another thing that caught my interest was the artistic elements of the page. This document shows contrast well in that the main body of one font size and the title is much larger. Alignment is evident although somewhat unconventional with the title is positioned at the top right of the page and main script is in the center of the page and creates the alignment need for the bible. The repetition is seen with the main body of the text in the middle of the page in addition to the circular messages at the top and bottom. The page has proximity with the main text in the center of the page and the notations at the bottom of the page.

experiences producing the PSA

Week 5 Blog
I was successful the course assignments with the help of my cohorts Lynne Bullock, Shannon Copeland, Janet Kelly, Julia Wilson. They were invaluable in the completion of our Public Service Broadcast. They had written the script and planned very well. Shannon had as much knowledge of video editing as I did and she was great at the edit of the video. I was discouraged because I was very busy and had family problems that put me behind the rest of the team. I really had to spend as much energy keeping up with team as I did on the project. In all I learn that it was team effort and we all were successful. This was a great learning lesson that I can teach my students that it is important to work as a team. I learned about the audio and video aspects in the course. How freeware can help students in projects like PSA we end up doing

Course Reflections 5362

What outcomes had you envisioned for this course? Did you achieve those outcomes? Did the actual course outcomes align with those that you envisioned?

The outcomes I envisioned for this course were outlined in the syllabus at the beginning of the course. After finishing most of this course, I can see that we covered all the listed outcomes. I have had quite a bit of experience with multimedia and video from my time as the video coordinator for Tivy Football team. The Web 2.0 tools weren’t as mainstream at that time as they are now. The hands on skills of video editing, converting audio and video into various formats that can be used weren’t new skills for me, as the Web 2.0 tools weren’t new skills. I wish we could have explored deeper into the applications of these tools.
I didn’t have any predetermined ideas about what we would learn in this course, so the outcomes that I read in the syllabus aligned with what I hoped we would be taught and indeed, were taught. I do feel that I had accomplished most of these outcomes in my job as a video coordinator. I had to explore all these web tools and had to come up with free and simple to use program in this job.

To the extent that you achieved the outcomes, are they still relevant to the work that you do in your school? Why or why not?

Yes, the outcomes that I achieved are relevant to my job. As a math teacher I can teach my students about the copyright laws and applying them in their projects. I enjoyed the Disney copyright video. The Disney copyright video will help drive home the importance of copyright laws. In addition, I plan to slideshare for my powerpoint project for my Algebra classes. These are great tools in the classroom to improve the education and have the students actively engaged in the learning process. I plan to use wiki site and slideshare for my students’ projects on solving equation and the distributive property. I see it as helping my students with their Algebra 1 and their quest for knowledge.

What outcomes did you not achieve? What prevented you from achieving them?

There were no unachieved outcomes. My only concern is the confusion in Week 2 and that was clarified with the web conference. Dr. A. told us what we needed to accomplish in the web conference and I did it. However, there was a great deal of complaining about it the confusion and honestly I don’t feel we have time to spend listening to one another complain. The week 3 assignment submission was a bit chaotic, but after attending the web conference all of my questions were answered.
I think the lessons directed us through all of the outcomes. The influence of communication using multimedia tools and web tools were utilized during the creation of our PSA. I am amazed at how easy it was to create a 60 second video with 5 people each contributing a different part of the work. We used Skype, Google Docs and a project template wiki to complete our project ahead of time. These collaboration tools and the opportunity to put them to use are a fabulous part of the learning I will take away from this class. The digital storytelling project guided me to discover a vast array of previously unknown information about my parents and their life together.

Were you successful in completing the course assignments? If not, what prevented or discouraged you?
I was successful in completing the course assignments with the help of my cohorts Lynne Bullock, Shannon Copeland, Janet Kelly, and Julia Wilson. They were invaluable in the completion of our Public Service Broadcast. They had written the script and planned very well. Shannon has an extensive knowledge of video editing as I did and she was fabulous in the role of video editor. I was discouraged because I was very busy and had family constraints that put me behind the rest of the team. I really had to spend as much energy keeping up with team as I did on the project. In all I learn that it was team effort and we all were successful. This was a great learning lesson that I can teach my students the importance of teamwork.

What did you learn from this course: about yourself, your technology and leadership skills, and your attitudes?

This course taught me that there are a world of tools on the web for everyone to use. There are Collaborative Tools, Research Tools, Slideshow Tools, Audio Tools, Image Tools, Drawing Tools, Writing Tools, Music Tools, Organizing, Mapping Tools, Quiz and Poll Tools, Creativity Tools, Widgets, File Storage & Web Pages
There are open source examples of all these tools free online. The tools I listed are all linked to a website called: cooltoolsforschools.wikispaces.com.These are examples of things I knew nothing about before beginning this master’s program.
I even subscribed to PC World and eSchoolNews to keep up with the new technologies in the world and in the schools. I see the value in video tools in the classroom educational process

Web conference 2 week

The web cast was very helpful for next week and submitting the rest of this week’s work. I was hoping for better sound and more people interacting. I found out that most people were worried about converting file extensions, which is something I had little trouble with as well. I feel that all the experience I have with video editing has allowed me to plan for these things and alleviate the worry about it. However, as a new learner to video editing this is a critical piece of the puzzle.

Video Edit software

If you're running Microsoft Windows 7, you have a lot of video-editing choices, ranging in price from free to $700 or more. Given the cost and complexity of higher-end products, it's best to purchase the least expensive product that will perform the editing functions you need. So the logical starting point in your decision process is the free programs.
Movie Maker is included as part of Windows. Being a free application, Movie Maker doesn't seek to compete with midrange products. It offers enough basic features to get the job done but stops short of the lavish options and effects found in other programs. For example, although Movie Maker includes numerous text motion effects for rolling credits and similar animations, there are no canned text styles to aid in the design. One problem I encountered with Movie Maker was when we made a movie, saved it in the Movie Maker format then when we tried to show it from that format it would not play. We tried unsuccessfully to save it in several other formats and finally succeeded when we saved it in NSTC format in order to show it.
I did try to download WAX but could not successfully download it so I could not try it.
I have use Pinnacle for years and I am very familiar with the program. I know how to make titles and splice film into it and out. I have used it to make video highlights of games and game videos to trade. I have used the slow motion as well as freeze frame options. I like the easy to see timeline. You can format the output into many formats in addition to importing almost all video formats to the program. This program is easy to use once you practice with it for a period of time. Movie Maker might be easy to learn quickly but Pinnacle 2.0 has more format options. Pinnacle is slow at rendering video into its format output however I feel the varying options and the ease of use makes up for that

Web Conference

The web conference on Saturday was highlyinformative. I learned that I need to post both my quotes for the week and and my script on the discussion board. In addition, I also found out that the story board needed to be digital. I found a group to work with for weeks three through five. Julia and a few others in my cohort will be in a group to produce the video we are assigned. I wanted my video camera to work but it had some problems so fellow students did not get to see me. Maybe it will this coming week.

Long range plan

Of all four areas of the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, the one that I believe has the most impact of the rest is the Educator Preparation and Development area. We need teachers fully equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate technology into instruction, else technology plan become useless.

The Educator Preparation and Development area is has six sections; Content of Professional Development, Models of Professional Development, Capabilities of Educators, Access to Professional Development, Levels of Understanding and Patterns of Use, and Professional Development for Online Learning. According to the Texas STaR Chart, our school scored overall at the Developing Tech stage in the 2008-2009 school years. An overwhelming majority of the state’s schools, a 74.2% of the schools were at the Developing Tech stage in the 2007-08 year. Nearly 84% of Texas schools were at the Advance Tech or Developing Tech stage. Our campus has not move in the direction of Advance Tech.

Based on the Texas Campus and Teacher STaR Charts, in order to turn these trends around, we need to develop on-going professional development that focuses on providing tech application strategies for educators that will create learning environments where kids are allowed to think critically and where they have the means to collaborate with experts across business, industry and higher education. We also need to offer anytime, anywhere learning available through individually guided activities and inquiry action research. In order for teachers to be able to do this, we must also provide professional development that helps all teachers in technology and it uses. Teachers should also receive year around professional development training in order to create learning opportunities for all students.

It doesn’t matter how much administrative support or advance infrastructure we develop, incorporating technology in teaching and learning will not occur until teachers have the time and knowledge to do it.

National Standards

After reading both the National Educational Technology Plan: Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology (United States Department of Education, 2010), and The Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020 (Texas Education Agency, 2006), it seems they have multiple points in common. The philosophy presented in both documents is essentially the same however; the national plan explores to a greater depth the needs of the 21st century learner.

The national plan has five priority areas: Learning, Assessment; Teaching; Infrastructure and Productivity. The plan focuses on transforming the US education system so it can meet the demands of a 21st century society. That phrase "transforming education powered by technology" is found throughout the plan.

The plan is recommending a major overhaul of the United States education system. It describes a system where technology will play a key role in overhauling the existing system to better meet the needs of students today. An Education system having more student-centric and constant accessibility is the goal. The plan is encouraging a move to "connected teaching" so that teachers will no longer have to work as independent facilitators but instead with the help of technology, they can teach in teams.

Overall, reading the national plan provided me with no overwhelming insight that the Texas plan did not already cover in one degree or another. I found the information fantastic and realistic, but the only real problem is training the teachers and curriculum writers. Once the curriculum focuses on student exploration and problem solving as opposed to rote memorization of content, then much of this plan will be assimilated with ease. I believe current curriculum forces this plan into a slow implemented schedule.

Summary Texas Long Range Plan

The Texas Long Range Plan for Technology 2006-2020 breaks down its report into four parts: Teaching and Learning; Educator Preparation and Development; Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support; and Infrastructure for Technology. The results of the study indicate that state is moving toward the Target Technology.

In the Teaching and Learning category, using the Texas STaR Chart for statistics, it appears that teachers are implementing more technology in their classrooms. This conclusion can be drawn from the 5% increase in Advanced Tech and subsequent 5% decrease in Developing Tech. These teachers are using the tech in a number of ways including direct instruction, improved productivity as well as modeling technology skills.

Educator Preparation and Development shows a decrease in the Target Tech. This decrease could be result of additional elements in the 2006 STaR chart compared to that to that of 2005. However, by 2007 assessments fewer campuses were at the Early Tech level which is a position gain.

The state is moving forward toward Target Tech in terms of Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support. This can be seen in the STaR chart where there was growth in both Advance Tech and Target Tech. Advance Tech show larger gains moving from 39% to 45% with Target Tech gaining a single percentage. Another positive indicator is that very small number of campuses is still in the Early Tech stage in this focus area.

Progress in infrastructure for Technology is shown with those campuses rating Advance Tech increasing from 53% to 57%. The most significant gains came from those campuses achieving Target Tech status increasing from 5% to 7%. To achieve Target Tech there must be on demand access for every student and direct connectivity available in all classrooms and web based resources available in multiple rooms.

To sum it all up, even though some of the gains are small, Texas schools are progressing toward the goals outlined in the Texas Lang Range Plan for Technology 2006-2020.

Web Conference Internship

This was informative but I wish I could have like to see everyone. The internship is great because it lasts 18 months not just a semester. It was nice to listen to my cohorts and hear they have the same problems I am having. These conferences are a new way of communication but so bug need to be worked out in the process. I know that this was trying for some of us but we will get better at the conference. I have experienced new technology over the years but, in the end it all got better after using it for a period of time. I feel that way about making DVD’s and video on YouTube. At first it was painful to do the process. I just kept working to learn the process and what it will take to make a better product. We will get better at this video conferencing.
